Get Ready for Your Sailing Expedition | Tips

Tips for your sailing expedition

To help you prepare for this exciting adventure, we strongly encourage you to review the information below and watch the video in this post. A sailing expedition offers a unique combination of freedom, challenge, teamwork, and natural beauty. Whether you are an experienced sailor or stepping aboard for the first time, preparation will help you make the most of this unforgettable experience.

1. Choose the Right Mindset

We kindly ask you to join us fully present — 100%.
Please leave work responsibilities and other distractions behind. A sailing expedition is best experienced through full immersion, allowing you to learn, explore, and truly enjoy every moment with us.

2. Learn the Theory Before Boarding

Even if you are not enrolled in the International Crew, Bareboat Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal, or Offshore course, we recommend learning the basics beforehand.
A great starting point is the International Crew E-learning course (see the “Online Resources” tab). Please contact us for more information.

3. Pack Wisely

Space onboard is limited, so pack efficiently.

4. Safety First

  • Safety is our priority. Please familiarise yourself with:
  • Life jackets
  • Emergency equipment
  • Safety procedures
  • Onboard communication systems
  • We also offer VHF courses. Do you hold a VHF Certificate of Competency?

5. Be a Great Crew Member

  • Sailing is teamwork. A positive and collaborative attitude makes all the difference.
  • Communicate openly
  • Share responsibilities
  • Support one another
  • Bring something special to share with the crew
  • Cook your favourite meal one evening
  • Dinners onboard are often the most memorable moments of the expedition — we look forward to sharing beautiful experiences together.

6. Be Flexible

Sailing depends on weather conditions. Itineraries may change, and plans may adapt. A flexible mindset will help you embrace the dynamic nature of life at sea.

7. Respect the Environment

We share a deep respect for the ocean and its ecosystems. Please:

  • Dispose of waste responsibly
  • Avoid disturbing wildlife
  • Follow eco-friendly guidelines onboard
  • We are a non-profit organisation committed to ocean conservation. Learn more about our environmental initiatives at: www.a-eco.org
    Think globally, act locally.

8. Stay Hydrated and Well-Nourished

  • Sailing can be physically demanding, and the sea air can increase dehydration.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle (avoid metal bottles without rubber/foam protection).
  • Drinking water is available onboard.
  • Snacks, fresh fruit, and some sweets are provided.
  • If you have any dietary restrictions or special requirements, please inform us in advance.

9. Capture the Memories

  • Bring a waterproof camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking moments at sea. These memories will stay with you long after the expedition ends.
