After watching Good's video on pilotage, we learned what pilotage is and how, even with today's technology, the old ways of pilotage are still needed for safe navigation. It is very helpful to understand the importance of pilotage.
This completely relates to our Sailing Expedition>> to Mazagón, as we visited four harbours. From the video, we used most of the pilotage techniques.
Most of the time, we used clearing lines and transits to check our position, especially near harbour entrances and shallow waters. These lines helped us check our charts and keep track as we approached unknown marinas. Also, we used pilot books and other nautical books to create pilotage plans for each harbour, so we could determine which dangers, landmarks, and routes were safe to take.
All in all, we learned how to combine Good's explanations and hands-on experience during the Mazagón journey, which made pilotage more practical. It showed us how to prepare, use navigation techniques, and good harbour pilotage books.
